An API client with no account: what the free tier does

Install the extension and start sending requests. No site account, no licence key, no cloud sync.

The free tier here is not a 14-day trial and not a watermarked demo. It is a permanent tier covering request sending, collections, environments and the full import pipeline. Below: what is included, where the line is, and why the absence of an account is more than a convenience.

Why no account matters

Across this category, signing in to the vendor has quietly become a condition of using collections. Postman removed the offline Scratch Pad entirely on 15 September 2023: the lightweight client starts without signing in, but collections and environments require an account. Insomnia 8.0 also demanded an account and only partly reversed that afterwards.

For some work this is a blocker rather than an annoyance: an air-gapped test environment, requests carrying production tokens, a policy that forbids pushing data to third-party services, or a contractor who is not allowed to create accounts on a client behalf.

In the PolyApiIDE free tier no site account is needed to install, to send requests, or to keep collections. Server-side features use a technical client_id, which is a credential for an integration rather than a user profile.

What is free

  • Sending requests: REST, GraphQL, WebSocket, SOAP, SSE and gRPC via JSON transcoding.
  • Collections, spaces and environments.
  • Variables with the request → collection → space → environment hierarchy; empty values are not substituted.
  • {{var}} and {var} substitution in URLs, headers and request bodies.
  • Import: Postman collections and environments, OpenAPI JSON and YAML, WSDL, GraphQL SDL and introspection, .proto, AsyncAPI, curl, Insomnia, Hoppscotch, Thunder Client.
  • Pre-request and after-response scripts.
  • Up to two concurrent sessions.

Where the free tier ends

So there are no surprises, these need a paid tier:

  • Request-level QA checks and linked scenarios.
  • Functional runner for whole-collection runs.
  • Load profiles and metrics.
  • PDF run reports.
  • Collection and section patches.
  • More than two concurrent sessions.

Where your data physically lives

Collections, environments and tokens are kept in the browser local storage on your machine. The extension does not sync them to a server in the background. Anything that leaves does so because you exported a file, built a patch or took a snapshot.

The practical consequence: delete the browser profile and the data goes with it. If your collections matter, export them the way you would back up any other local file.

Frequently asked

Will the free tier expire?

No. It is permanent and needs no key.

Do you need my email?

Not for the free tier. An email is only needed if you buy a paid tier or request a demo key: it is bound to the licence and used for key recovery.

Does it work without internet access?

The client itself does — it runs in the browser. Internet access is only needed for your requests to reach the API. Requests to services on your local network work without any outbound access.

How is this different from the demo key?

The free tier is a permanent baseline. The demo key is a 24-hour key that unlocks the paid features in full: QA, load, reports. One demo key per email address.

Any ads or tracking in the free tier?

No ads. What is processed is listed in the privacy policy, linked in the footer.
